The April Senator Spotlight is on Andrzej Czygrinow

What unit do you represent?

I represent the School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences

How many years have you served on the Senate?

2 years

How many years have you been employed at ASU?  What other institutions have you taught at before coming to ASU?

I have been at ASU for 14 years. Before coming to ASU I taught at Adam Mickiewicz University in Poland, and at Emory University (as a graduate student).

What is your research and/or creative activities focus?

I am a mathematician working in the area of graph theory. Graph theory provides theoretical foundations for networks and has applications in many different areas ranging from computer science to sociology. At the same time, the theory contains numerous deep and surprising facts as well as intriguing open problems.

Why did you decide to get involved with the Senate?

I was elected by my colleagues and thought that serving on the Senate would give me a chance to learn about the university operations. I also wanted to find out more about challenges that ASU has to confront.

Describe what you have learned during your time on the Senate.

In addition to learning about specific issues that were discussed during the Senate meetings, I have gained a much better understanding of ASU policies and the role of the Senate.

What committees have you participated in, or would like to participate in and what were you able to (or hope to) accomplish.

I have served on the Committee on Committees where I was involved in identifying suitable candidates for academic assembly elections.

What would you say to your peers who might be considering accepting a nomination or nominating themselves for a position on the Senate?

Serving on the Senate gives an excellent opportunity to learn about university policies and its operations. In addition, the Senate is a perfect place to discuss important issues which impact ASU students, faculty, and the rest of the university community.
