Senate Motion #2014-58

Motion Introduced by: Curriculum and Academic Programs Committee, Eduardo Pagan, Chair

Date of First Reading: March 3, 2014

Date of Second Reading: March 31, 2014

Title of Motion: Request from the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences – CLAS Dean’s Office – Consortium of Science, Policy and Outcomes – for the name change of a graduate degree  From: Professional Science Masters in Science and Technology Policy – To: Master of Science and Technology Policy

Action Requested: The Curriculum and Academic Programs Committee recommends University Senate approval of a proposal submitted by the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences – CLAS Dean’s Office – Consortium of Science, Policy and Outcomes – for the name change of a graduate degree – From: Professional Science Masters in Science and Technology Policy – To: Master of Science and Technology Policy

Rationale: The program was never granted official PSM (Professional Science Masters) affiliation by Council of Graduate Schools (CGS), and we would like to remove that from the program name. The official target of the program was to target professionals who wanted to return for a master’s degree. After three years, the program has attracted students directly from undergraduate studies, professionals, and students wishing to complete a master’ program, prior to applying to a doctoral program.  Removing the “Professional Science” from the name would more correctly indicate the program structure and should help with recruiting efforts.
