Senate Motion #2015-01

Motion Introduced by: University Academic Council

Date of First Reading: September 8, 2014

Date of Second Reading: October 6, 2014

Title of Motion: Modifications to ACD 304-09 Evaluation of Teaching

Action Requested: The University Academic Council recommends the Senate approve of the edits noted below, to ACD-304-09

Rationale: The existing version of ACD 304-09 was written in such a way that it did not acknowledge the current use of electronic evaluations. The new wording removes the reference to paper forms, and references evaluations in any form. The proposed edits also include the requirement for academic units to maintain the results of the evaluations and for the chair to review them

Existing wording of ACD 304-09: Every instructor in every class every semester is required to administer an academic unit approved course evaluation form. The administration procedure should assure students the ability to respond forthrightly and anonymously. The evaluation must be distributed and collected by someone other than the instructor; the instructor must not see the evaluation or its summary prior to submitting grades for the course; and a copy of the results must be reviewed by the academic unit chair.

Proposed Wording: Every instructor in every class every semester is required to provide the opportunity for registered students to submit an academic-unit-approved course evaluation. The administration procedure should assure students the ability to respond forthrightly and anonymously. Regardless of the mode (e.g., web-based, paper, etc.) in which the evaluation takes place, the evaluation must be distributed and collected by someone other than the instructor. The instructor must not see the results of the evaluation or its summary prior to submitting grades for the course.  A copy of the results must be kept in the academic unit and reviewed by the academic unit chair.
