Motion Introduced by: Curriculum and Academic Programs Committee, Steven Semken, Chair

First Reading: October 26, 2015

Second Reading: November 23, 2015

Title of Motion: Request from the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences – School of International Letters and Cultures – for the establishment of an undergraduate certificate – Modern Hebrew

Action Requested: This curricular proposal has received all college, school, unit and university administrative approvals, and is being presented to the Senate for review and voting decision.

Rationale: The Certificate in Modern Hebrew provides students with a firm foundation in Modern Hebrew language and a broad knowledge in Israeli culture. It leads them to advanced skills in reading, writing, and conversing in Modern Hebrew. It also includes study of the Israeli culture, literature, politics, and history. It enriches students’ perspective on the Middle East, and offers them a deeper understanding of the current affairs in that area. It benefits students pursuing careers in foreign politics, in different levels of education, in international business, in tourism, in the media, and in translation.
