Senate Motion #2018-27

Motion Introduced by: Curriculum and Academic Programs Committee, Caroline Harrison, Chair

Date of First Reading: January 29, 2018

Date of Second Reading: February 26, 2018

Title of Motion: Request from the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences – Department of English – for the establishment of an undergraduate certificate – Interdisciplinary Health Humanities

Action Requested: This curricular proposal has received all college, school, unit and university administrative approvals, and is being presented to the Senate for review and voting decision.

Rationale: Interdisciplinary Health Humanities integrates humanistic perspectives into analyses of health and medicine to address challenges in health policy and health care practice, and to advance understandings of the cultural formations of health, illness, and the body. Through coursework and an internship or applied project, students with this certificate will be trained to see how the humanities promote health and wellbeing for health professionals, patients and communities, and they will gain critical structural awareness of how health and healthcare are culturally determined and situated. The certificate is for humanities majors seeking coursework on the complex, transdisciplinary challenges of health, as well as those in other majors who are interested in careers in the health professions, especially as medical schools and other health professional programs increase their emphases on empathy, mindfulness, resilience, narrative competency, well-being, and ethical and compassionate research and care.
