Motion Introduced by: Curriculum and Academic Programs Committee, Caroline Harrison, Chair

Date of First Reading: February 26, 2018

Date of Second Reading: March 26, 2018

Title of Motion: Request from the School for the Future of Innovation in Society - for the establishment of a graduate program – PhD in Innovation in Global Development

Action Requested: This curricular proposal has received all college, school, unit and university administrative approvals, and is being presented to the Senate for review and voting decision.

Rationale: The School for the Future of Innovation in Society (SFIS) proposes to establish a doctoral degree in Innovation in Global Development that creates new values about the meaning of development and has a real impact on societies. This degree will expand the intellectual foundations needed to address the complex global development challenges of the 21st century. By providing coursework and real-world exposure to both the successes and failures of past models of development, the proposed PhD seeks to provide opportunities for students to reimagine development policies and practices crucially needed for the world. This will include challenging the orthodoxies around technology and development.
