Senate Motion #2019-14

Motion Introduced by: Curriculum and Academic Programs Committee, Lili Wang, Chair

Date of First Reading: September 24, 2018

Date of Second Reading: October 29, 2018

Title of Motion: Request from the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences – School of Historical, Philosophical and Religious Studies – for the establishment of an undergraduate certificate – Sports, Cultures and Ethics

Action Requested: This curricular proposal has received all college, school, unit and university administrative approvals, and is being presented to the Senate for review and voting decision.

Rationale: The Sports, Cultures and Ethics certificate provides a multi- and transdisciplinary inquiry into the social, ethical and cultural influence of athletics and sports spectatorship in our society. The certificate complements and contributes to the Global Sports Initiative that is currently underway at ASU. Our humanities approach will provide historical grounding and an appreciation of how participation and investment in sports culture shapes our lives. We provide studies that include the ethical dimensions of supporting professional sports, the cultural implications of gendered sports cultures, and the religious aspects of fandom.
