Motion Introduced by: Curriculum and Academic Programs Committee, Lili Wang, Chair

Date of First Reading: September 24, 2018

Date of Second Reading: October 29, 2018

Title of Motion: Request from the New College of Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences – School of Social and Behavioral Sciences – for the establishment of an undergraduate certificate – Communication Training and Assessment

Action Requested: This curricular proposal has received all college, school, unit and university administrative approvals, and is being presented to the Senate for review and voting decision.

Rationale: This certificate combines coursework from across the communication curriculum to provide students with grounding in how best to assess, train, and develop communications skills in business, professional, and community settings. Certificate holders will develop expertise in communication training, presentation skills, professional development, and assessment practices. The certificate curriculum is enhanced through access to an award-winning, state-of-the-art communication assessment lab located on the west campus. This facility provides direct and intensive training in presentation skills, workplace communication skills, and communication skills assessment. The combination of relevant coursework and hands-on-experience developed through the lab will provide certificate holders with the knowledge and confidence to effectively train others in a variety of professional and community settings.
