Senate Motion #2019-51
Motion Introduced by: Curriculum and Academic Programs Committee, Lili Wang, Chair
Date of First Reading: March 25, 2019
Date of Second Reading: April 22, 2019
Title of Motion: Request from the College of Nursing and Health Innovation – for the establishment of a graduate certificate – Emergency Nurse Practitioner
Action Requested: This curricular proposal has received all college, school, unit and university administrative approvals, and is being presented to the Senate for review and voting decision.
Rationale: The emergency nurse practitioner certificate program provides preparation for an advanced practice registered nursing role eligible for certification by the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners Certification Board (AANPCB) in conjunction with the American Academy of Emergency Nurse Practitioners (AAENP). The Emergency Nurse Practitioner role is unique in that it spans population and acuity continuums. Emergency care focuses on potentially life-threatening conditions irrespective of the patient’s initial chief complaint or reason for seeking care. Emergency Nurse Practitioners must be prepared to provide primary care, acute resuscitation, as well as manage complex, unstable conditions in patients of all ages.
