Senate Motion #2019-52

Motion Introduced by:  Curriculum and Academic Programs Committee, Lili Wang, Chair

Date of First Reading:   March 25, 2019

Date of Second Reading: April 22, 2019

Title of Motion: Request from the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts – The Design School – for the name change of a graduate degree – from MS in Built Environment – to MS in Architecture

Action Requested: This curricular proposal has received all college, school, unit and university administrative approvals, and is being presented to the Senate for review and voting decision.

Rationale: The proposed change from MS in the Built Environment to MS in Architecture, will align the degree name with the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture and Architectural Research Centers Consortium's recognition of the MS in Architecture as the official post-professional research-based degree in the industry. The content of the current MS in the Built Environment aligns with the content of the MS in Architecture. The MS in the Built Environment is an obscure degree name that hinders the visibility and recognition of the program and its research as well as that of the students, alumni and faculty.
