Date of First Reading: March 30, 2020
Date of Second Reading: April 27, 2020
Title of Motion: Request from the College of Global Futures – for the establishment of a new academic unit – School of Complex Adaptive Systems
Action Requested: This curricular proposal has received all college, school, unit and university administrative approvals, and is being presented to the Senate for review and voting decision.
Rationale: ASU is one of the very top academic institutions worldwide studying the future of our planet and the interplay between the natural and built environments. Because the Earth system, including the human domain, is the ultimate complex system, it cannot be studied or projected to future states without a dedicated effort in understanding the fundamental nature of complex systems, the application of complex systems theory to problem solving, and teaching the next generation of leaders in the fields of sustainability and innovation for the future the basic skills needed for decision making under complex circumstances.
