2021-12

Motion Introduced by:  Curriculum and Academic Programs Committee,

Date of First Reading: November 23, 2020

Date of Second Reading: February 1, 2021

Title of Motion: Request from the Watts College of Public Service and Community Solutions – School of Public Affairs - for the disestablishment of an undergraduate degree – BA in Urban and Metropolitan Studies

Action Requested: This curricular proposal has received all college, school, unit and university administrative approvals, and is being presented to the Senate for review and voting decision.

Rationale: 1) The School of Public Affairs is seeking approval to add the Public Service and Public Policy concentration in Urban and Metropolitan Governance in spring 2021. The Urban and Metropolitan Governance concentration will attract Public Service and Public Policy students who are interested in the building blocks of policy and governance of cities and metropolitan areas. 2) The school is in the middle of restructuring Urban and Metropolitan Studies, emphasizing interdisciplinarity. The revised BS degree and future concentration will attract students who are less interested in a public policy degree, but more interested in learning about policy challenges associated with metropolitan regions with a strong emphasis on policy analysis, the construction and application of analytical frameworks, and diverse contexts, with a special focus on cities in the American Southwest.
