Motion Introduced by: Curriculum and Academic Programs Committee,
Denise Bodman, Chair

Date of First Reading: April 26, 2021

Date of Second Reading: August 30, 2021

Title of Motion: Request from the Watts College of Public Service and Community Solutions – School of Criminology and Criminal Justice – for the name change of a graduate certificate – from: Corrections Management – to: Corrections Leadership and Management
Action Requested: This curricular proposal has received all college, school, unit and university administrative approvals, and is being presented to the Senate for review and voting decision.

Rationale:

The goal of this name change, along with changes to program requirements, is to help corrections officers in all branches of the field (jails, prisons, halfway houses, probation, and parole) to change the traditional ways in which they do their jobs from a reactive framework into one that focuses on transformational leadership, team building, motivation, and collaboration with employees at all different levels of an organization. The need for responsible and innovative leadership in this field is intrinsically tied to various calls for reform in corrections facilities throughout the nation.
