Motion Introduced by: Curriculum and Academic Programs Committee,

Date of First Reading: September 27, 2021

Date of Second Reading: October 25, 2021

Title of Motion: Request from the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences- School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences – for the Name Change of a Graduate Certificate - From: Statistics, To: Statistics and Data Science

Action Requested: This curricular proposal has received all college, school, unit and university administrative approvals, and is being presented to the Senate for review and voting decision.

Rationale: Data Science has recently become hugely important for many large businesses (Google, Facebook, Amazon etc.). The School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences has recently obtained approval for an Undergraduate Degree in Data Science to reflect the changing job market. At the Graduate level, we have responded by shifting the emphasis in our statistics curriculum to include data science coursework. It is important that the title of the Graduate Certificate reflects that learning opportunity in Statistics and in Data Science. The name change will increase certificate marketability.
