Date of First Reading:    January 31, 2022

Date of Second Reading: February 28, 2022

Title of Motion: Request from the Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College – Division of Teacher Preparation – for the establishment of an undergraduate certificate – Elementary Education

Action Requested: This curricular proposal has received all college, school, unit and university administrative approvals, and is being presented to the Senate for review and voting decision.

Rationale: The Certificate in Elementary Education will enable students enrolled in any Teacher Preparation undergraduate program to add the Elementary Education certificate to their major. Through the certificate area, graduates will earn eligibility for an institutional recommendation for an Elementary Education credential through the Arizona Department of Education. The certificate will prepare students to work with children, grades Kindergarten through 8th grade, in an educational setting. Coursework will support the development of instructional competencies, professional skills and content knowledge. Coursework will be complemented by professional experiences which will provide students opportunities to apply and reflect upon their knowledge and skills in teaming and collaborative models. This certificate will provide extensive experience in integrating educational technology and will have a strong focus on teaching and learning practices that foster equitable access and outcomes for culturally and linguistically diverse students and learners with special needs/exceptionalities.
