Motion Introduced by:  Curriculum and Academic Programs Committee

Date of First Reading:    January 31, 2022

Date of Second Reading: February 28, 2022

Title of Motion: Request from the Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College – Division of Teacher Preparation – for the establishment of an undergraduate certificate – Mild/Moderate Special Education

Action Requested: This curricular proposal has received all college, school, unit and university administrative approvals, and is being presented to the Senate for review and voting decision.

Rationale: A certificate for Mild/Moderate Special Education will provide an opportunity for students across select Teacher Preparation undergraduate programs to add this certificate to their degree program. The certificate will provide the coursework necessary for students to be eligible to earn an institutional recommendation for a Mild/Moderate Special Education Arizona credential. The Mild/Moderate Special Education certificate prepares educators who make connections across multiple equity concerns to meet the needs of diverse students, particularly students with disabilities. Students who will earn this certificate will be ready to work in a range of communities and to partner with school community members to co-construct and negotiate professional roles and responsibilities in order to deliver effective special education programming for students with disabilities.
