Motion Introduced by: Curriculum and Academic Programs Committee

Date of First Reading: October 3, 2022

Date of Second Reading: October 24, 2022

Title of Motion: Request from Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering – Computer Science and Engineering Program – for the establishment of a graduate degree – MS in Data Science, Analytics and Engineering

Action Requested: This curricular proposal has received all college, school, unit and university administrative approvals, and is being presented to the Senate for review and voting decision.

Rationale: Data scientists are consistently ranked among the top jobs in the USA, and there is an increasing need for all engineers to make use of data science tools like statistics, machine learning, artificial neural networks, artificial intelligence, etc. Yet, the majority of engineering occupations require subject matter expertise beyond data science. This degree enables students to receive an advanced education in high-demand data science and their chosen engineering field in an integrated program. Required core classes in probability and statistics, machine learning, and data engineering are complemented by concentration-specific courses to ensure breadth and depth in data science and a core engineering discipline.
