Motion Introduced by: Curriculum and Academic Programs Committee

Date of First Reading: January 29, 2024

Date of Second Reading: February 26, 2024

Title of Motion: Request from the College of Health Solutions – for the name change of a graduate degree – From: MS in Biomedical Informatics – To: MS in Biomedical Informatics and Data Science

Action Requested: This curricular proposal has received all college, school, unit and university administrative approvals, and is being presented to the Senate for review and voting decision.

Rationale: Expertise in biomedical informatics and data science is a skill most sought after by trainees as well as employers across the healthcare industry and in non-profit biomedical research institutions. The “data science” addition to the name also emphasizes the importance of analytical approaches for managing, integrating and analyzing biomedical data with the ultimate goal of improving health. The areas of statistics, data mining, machine learning, artificial intelligence, databases, etc. are already covered in many of the current biomedical informatics courses in the context and application of addressing health-related challenges.
