Motion Introduced by: Curriculum and Academic Programs Committee

Date of First Reading: March 25, 2024

Date of Second Reading: April 29, 2024

Title of Motion: Request from the Watts College of Public Service and Community Solutions – School of Public Affairs – for the disestablishment of an undergraduate degree – BS in Urban and Metropolitan Studies

Action Requested: This curricular proposal has received all college, school, unit and university administrative approvals, and is being presented to the Senate for review and voting decision.

Rationale: School of Public Affairs faculty have engaged in a rigorous analysis of the history, curricular structure, mode of delivery, and administrative burden of this distinct program in light of low enrollment.  Since the move downtown by the School of Public Affairs, the School of Geographical Studies and Urban Planning has established a number of undergraduate programs, including the BSP in Urban Planning and the Minor in Urban Planning.  In the larger professional ecosystem, these degrees are better recognized choices for students interested in focusing on urban affairs.
