Motion Introduced by: Curriculum and Academic Programs Committee

Date of First Reading: November 4, 2024

Date of Second Reading: December 2, 2024

Title of Motion: Request from Office of the University Provost – for the establishment of a graduate degree – MD in Medicine

Action Requested: This curricular proposal has received all college, school, unit and university administrative approvals, and is being presented to the Senate for review and voting decision.

Rationale: The Doctor of Medicine (MD) is a professional graduate degree that prepares students to become licensed medical doctors. The program will train life-long learners focused on solving clinical problems by delivering an extensive curriculum that includes both classroom-based learning and practical clinical experiences in diverse health care settings. Students will gain a broad understanding of fundamental health disciplines, including anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, pathology, pharmacology, microbiology and clinical medicine. Students will also gain a deep understanding of the underpinning engineering principles of the human body, and applications to diagnostics and health interventions. This will synergize with a concurrently offered MS in Medical Engineering.
