2026-50
Motion Introduced by: Curriculum and Academic Programs Committee
Date of First Reading: February 2, 2026
Date of Second Reading: March 2, 2026
Title of Motion: Request from the New College of Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences – School of Mathematical and Natural Sciences – for the name change of an undergraduate degree – From BA in Environmental Science – To BA in Environmental Studies
Action Requested: This curricular proposal has received all college, school, unit and university administrative approvals, and is being presented to the Senate for review and voting decision.
Rationale: We currently offer both a BS and BA in Environmental Science. The BA is a highly interdisciplinary degree program that draws on expertise in social sciences, ethics and philosophy with a focus on social justice, and is better described as Environmental Studies. Graduates with a BA in Environmental Studies may pursue degrees in law, conservation sciences, environmental scientist or specialist, or urban and regional planner.
