Senate Resolution #2016-31

Motion Introduced by: University Academic Council, Brenda Hosley, Chair

Title of Motion: Resolution against HB 2072 and HB 2338 - firearms; university; college; campus and educational institutions; rights-of-way.

Whereas, the University Senate at Arizona State University has previously adopted Senate Resolutions 2010 – 78, 2011 – 27, and 2012 – 28 in opposition to allowing firearms on our campuses;

whereas, the University Senate received overwhelming support from our representative members at Senate meeting #5 January 25, 2016 to reaffirm this opposition to guns on campus;

whereas, access and proximity to weapons in an educational environment is not consistent with the goals of learning, open communication and intellectual exchange in the university community;

be it resolved, that the University Senate, that represents nearly 3000 faculty members and academic professionals at Arizona State University, announces its unqualified opposition to House Bills 2072, HB 2338, and any additional guns on campus legislation that might be developed during this current legislative session. The University Senate finds the current proposed legislation to be a clear danger to the safety, security, and sense of well-being of students, staff, and faculty. The Arizona State University Senate, also supports the statement from ABOR Chair Jay Heiler that indicates the regent’s unanimous vote to oppose House Bill 2072 and House Bill 2338.
