Senator Spotlight December 2016

This month's Senator Spotlight is on Greg Stone

What unit do you represent?

Psychology

How many years have you served on the Senate?

I’ve been on the Senate for 1.5 years.

How many years have you been employed at ASU?

I have worked at ASU for 30 years.

What other institutions have you taught at before coming to ASU?

None

What is your research and/or creative activities focus?

Neural network modeling, pattern recognition, and Psycholinguistics

Why did you decide to get involved with the Senate?

I served as a substitute Senator and thought it would be a good way to make a service contribution.

Describe what you have learned during your time on the Senate.

I have learned a lot about how the University actually works

What committees have you participated in, or would like to participate in and what were you able to (or hope to) accomplish.

I served on and chaired the Research & Creative Activities Committee; served on the Executive Committee and the Open Access Task Force. I oversaw an RCA report on the reproducability crisis in science.

What would you say to your peers who might be considering accepting a nomination or nominating themselves for a position on the Senate?

In my unit, Senators write a brief report on Senate meetings for their colleagues. It is very rewarding when someone learns about something of relevance to them that they would not otherwise have known about.

Any final comments you might have.

Serving in the Senate has been a great experience. I hope to continue.
