Senate Motion #2014-57

Motion Introduced by: Curriculum and Academic Programs Committee, Eduardo Pagan, Chair

Date of First Reading: March 3, 2014

Date of Second Reading: March 31, 2014

Title of Motion: Request from the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences – School of Life Sciences – for the name change of a graduate degree From: MS in Plant Biology – To: MS in Plant Biology and Conservation

Action Requested: The Curriculum and Academic Programs Committee recommends University Senate approval of a proposal submitted by the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences- School of Life Sciences – for the name change of a graduate degree – From: MS in Plant Biology – To: MS in Plant Biology and Conservation

Rationale: A new partnership with the Desert Botanical Garden and refocus of faculty in SOLS on conservation and biodiversity in plant biology on top of student, government and non-government agency demands for Botanists trained in Conservation biology make a MS degree in plant biology and conservation an attractive and viable program that will draw students not only locally but US wide.

The change is also timely, given the recent expansion of research staff (potential mentors) at the nearby Desert Botanical Garden who have also adjunct Professor status in SOLS.
