Title of Motion: Request from The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences – School of Social Transformation – for the name change of a graduate certificate – From: African Studies – To: African and African American Studies

Action Requested: This curricular proposal has received all college, school, unit and university administrative approvals, and is being presented to the Senate for review and voting decision. 

Rationale: After careful deliberation, African and African American Studies has decided to change the name of its graduate certificate from "African Studies" to "African & African American Studies." "African Studies" neither accurately reflected our curriculum nor the expertise of our faculty. This correction places our graduate certificate program in alignment with our graduate offerings while simultaneously reflecting the breath of our graduate curriculum. It also brings the program in alignment with the unit's undergraduate programs: the BA in African and African American Studies, and the undergraduate minor and certificate in African and African American Studies.
