Date of First Reading: April 27, 2026

Date of Second Reading: August 31, 2026

Title of Motion: Request from Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts – School of Music, Dance and Theatre – for the establishment of a graduate certificate – Certificate in Vocal Pedagogy

Action Requested: This curricular proposal has received all college, school, unit and university administrative approvals, and is being presented to the Senate for review and voting decision.

Rationale: The Graduate Vocal Pedagogy Microcertificate will provide opportunities for current and future singing teachers, collaborative pianists, and choral directors to cultivate their knowledge of the field of vocal pedagogy and further develop their teaching skills. This nine-credit program includes coursework in vocal pedagogy, applied voice, diction, and a teaching practicum, and is designed to complement existing graduate degrees and coursework within the School of Music, Dance and Theatre. By utilizing existing courses, the program offers a flexible and accessible option for students seeking to enhance their professional preparation without the substantial time and financial commitment required for a full master’s degree.
