Q&A with senator
ASU affiliated:
How many years have you been employed at ASU?
This is my 9th year!
What other institutions have you taught at before coming to ASU?
This is my first faculty position; prior to this, I worked for local governments in Arizona.
What is your research and/or creative activities focus?
I enjoy seeking out small funding opportunities that provide stipends to students to support public health and rural health activities. I am currently working with the Arizona Rural Health Association on a grant that brings obstetric simulation training to rural hospitals without birthing centers. Some of the funding is being used to support a graduate student who is working on the evaluation component of the training program. I also enjoy working with community partners to place students in meaningful internships and capstone experiences. I recently formed a partnership with the Arizona State Hospital. I also work with Native Health. I am also passionate about creating engaging online classes using new technologies and mentoring students.

How many years have you served in the Senate?
This is my third year
Why did you decide to get involved with the Senate?
I want to advocate for policies that support career-track faculty. Last year, I taught nearly 500 students, and I know many of my colleagues taught even more!
Describe what you have learned (or hope to learn) during your time in the Senate?
I have gained a “big picture” perspective on curriculum and program decisions. I served as a program director in my unit for seven years, so this view was very helpful to fill in gaps in my understanding.
What committees have you participated in, or would like to participate in and what were you able to (or hope to) accomplish?
I appreciate the committees' work and am glad to serve on the Personnel Committee this year! I feel the ongoing work related to career-track faculty is a good fit for my energy!
What would you say to your peers who might be considering accepting a nomination or nominating himself or herself for a position in the University Senate?
Serving in the Senate is an invaluable experience. It gave me a better idea and understanding of how decisions are made and what shared governance is. I feel this service opportunity cleared up my own misconceptions and could do the same for others. I think the best way to advocate for policies you believe in is to get involved!
