Q&A with senator

ASU affiliated:

What unit do you represent?

School of Applied Sciences and Arts (SAS) in the College of Integrative Sciences and Arts (CISA)

How many years have you been employed at ASU?

5 years

What other institutions have you taught at before coming to ASU?

University of New Mexico

What is your research and/or creative activities focus?

My research focuses on immigration, migration, the U.S.-Mexico Borderlands, and the American Southwest. My book with the University of Arizona Press, Illegalized: Undocumented Youth Movements in the United States (2025 International Latino Book Award - Silver Medal - Best Academic Themed Book, College Level), analyzes the historical trajectory of undocumented youth advocacy and their claims to belonging in the U.S. through activism. As co-director of the newly launched Latinx Oral History lab, I use oral history and storytelling practices to connect my academic work with community-based development like the historical contributions of the Latinx and ethnic communities in Phoenix’s East Valley.

Senate affiliated:

How many years have you served in the Senate?

2 years

Why did you decide to get involved with the Senate?

I decided to get involved with the Senate because I believe shared governance is essential to fostering an inclusive and collaborative academic environment. As faculty, we have a responsibility to ensure that policies and decisions reflect the diverse needs of our students, staff, and colleagues. Joining the Senate allowed me to contribute my perspective as a scholar working on migration, equity, and community engagement, and to advocate for initiatives that strengthen access and belonging across ASU.

Describe what you have learned (or hope to learn) during your time in the Senate?

During my time in the Senate, I have learned how interconnected our university systems are and how faculty voices can shape meaningful change. I’ve gained insight into the complexities of policy development and resource allocation, and I hope to continue learning how to navigate these processes effectively to support interdisciplinary collaboration and student success. This experience has also deepened my appreciation for the importance of transparency and communication in institutional decision-making.

What committees have you participated in, or would like to participate in and what were you able to (or hope to) accomplish

I currently serve on the Committee on Health, Wellness, and Safety, which plays an important advisory role in shaping policies related to faculty health services, wellness, mental health, and overall safety across the ASU community. This work resonates deeply with my background and trajectory because my research and community engagement focus on issues of equity, belonging, and the lived experiences of marginalized communities. Advocating for faculty well-being and mental health parallels my commitment to creating environments where individuals feel supported and valued. Through this committee, I hope to contribute to initiatives that strengthen access to health resources, improve working conditions, and promote a culture of care and safety for faculty and students alike.

What would you say to your peers who might be considering accepting a nomination or nominating himself or herself for a position in the University Senate?

I would encourage my peers to consider serving in the Senate as an opportunity to make a tangible impact on our university. It’s a chance to bring your expertise and values into conversations that shape ASU’s future. Beyond policy work, it’s also a great way to build relationships with colleagues across disciplines and campuses. If you care about shared governance and want to advocate for positive change, the Senate is an excellent platform to do so.
